A knol written by Elkan Wijnberg, an antique jewelry addict, explain all interesting history, design and facts of antique jewelry.
Here is an interesting definition of jewelry by Mr. Wijnberg:
Jewelry (also spelled jewellery) is or are objects, whatever material they are made of, that we use to ornament ourselves and that are made from any type of material but mostly made from gemstones and precious metals. Whether put, pierced through, or hung on our body, their function is to show or pretend one’s status.
Mr. Wijnberg further explained that jewelry, as one’s status and identity in societies, is formed by the jewel that depends on the environment one is in. A very rare bead or shell in a primitive society can have the same value as the diamond whould have in our society.
Jewelry can be formed with various materials, from precious stones to enamel, determining the value of the jewelry itself. Along with the materials, the alloy and metal standards make jewelry value varies greatly.
