When a couple in advanced age plan to have a child, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) often arise as a sound choice.
The IVF main issue has always been evolving around egg donation by donor and the health challenges of the recipient. This post is focused on the latter.
According to the knol, there are several common causes of infertility:
- Problems with ovulation (the release of the egg from the ovary).
- Problems with sperm production (often not treatable, except by assisted conception).
- A blockage between the vagina and the ovary, preventing fertilization
- Endometriosis, a common condition in which the “endometrium” grows outside the uterus, disturbing a number of events essential to conception and implantation of the embryo in the uterus.
Although there are actually plenty of treatment available for infertility, IVF is the only way to go if assisted conception is needed.
The IVF success rate is excellent. However, there are speculation in which IVF plays a major role in increasing the risk of cancer, especially breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The studies on the role of IVF in cancer development are presently underway.
Please consider a second opinion before you decide to have IVF.
